Gluten Free IPS Cinnamon Egg White Ch(ips)

Health Values: Gluten free, non-GMO corn, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

I wanted to like these chips, I really did. They’re very light and crispy and would make a satisfying afternoon snack without any heaviness.

Gluten free IPS Cinnamon Chips

When I don’t like something to the point where I can’t even eat the rest of a snack-size bag, I immediately get opinions from other gluten-free friends. Unfortunately, that didn’t help. Here’s what each of us said:

GF Friend #1: “They taste like egg with too much cinnamon that seems like it’s trying to cover up the egg taste. And I love cinnamon, but there’s no real flavor contrast and it doesn’t belong on an eggy-tasting chip.

GF Friend #2: “Are these packing peanuts covered in cinnamon? I can’t taste anything other than cinnamon, and I don’t like the texture. I tried their barbecue flavor a couple months ago, and I didn’t like that either.” When asked after getting his review, GF Friend #2 said he didn’t notice any eggy taste like GF Friend #1 had.

Me: I didn’t taste egg, but I definitely didn’t want a second chip either.

Besides there being no complexity to the flavor of these chips – which would make eating even a small bag of them get boring very quickly – the cinnamon flavor was overwhelming, and all three of us love cinnamon. None of us tasted any sweetness despite the fact that the ingredients list both sugar and brown sugar.

On top of that, when we compared notes we discovered that each of us had quickly reached for something to kill the aftertaste. Keep in mind that we tried these chips at different times, away from each other, so none of us knew what the other thought or did during our individual taste tests.

So while I’m sure there are snackers out there who love IPS products, they’re not for us. I’m giving them one thumbs-up for their good ingredients.

Health Values: Certified gluten free, non-GMO verified, vegan, baked, low fat, kosher.

Confession: I miss potato chips. For the past two years that I’ve been on an anti-inflammatory diet – which doesn’t allow me to have regular potatoes and certainly nothing fried – I’ve missed that crunchy, snacky goodness that only potato chips delivered.

Until now.

Real Deal Veggie Chips

Real Deal Veggie Chips filled that void in my snack world, but in a much healthier way. They’re very light but have a satisfying crunch and don’t leave you feeling weighed down, nor is there an oily taste or feel since they’re baked and not fried. The lightly salty taste mixed with a mild sweet pea flavor makes for a wonderful combination.

The veggies used in Real Deal snacks are grown in Pennsylvania and made in a Pennsylvania Certified Organic facility, which makes me feel even better about them. They’re great as a snack by themselves or as a side for lunch or a barbecue.

I’m beyond thrilled with Real Deal Veggie Chips; I highly recommend them to any other crunch-loving snackers.

There has been a huge uptick in sweet potatoes eats over the past few years, and the list of sweet potato products has grown continually. Good Health Snacks has a few different kinds of snacks, but I tried their sweet potato sea salt chips.

Good Health Sweet Potato Chips

These were a wonderful surprise to someone that loves sweet potatoes in any form. Their aroma is natural and subtle when you first open the bag, but the treat is when you bite into the first chip and experience the pure, unadulterated sweet potato flavor. They’re v crisp and crunchy with just the right level of salt to bring out their flavor. What a great standalone snack that can be enjoyed anytime without the guilt associated with traditional chips!

I highly recommend these chips to anyone who is interested in a healthy potato chip alternative that doesn’t sacrifice on flavor.

Its brand name says it all: Snacks 101. The name is fitting because is made simply, through baking with coconut oil. You can choose from four flavors, and I got a sample of Smokey Chipotle.

These were a real delight to snack on. The popcorn was very light in texture and dry to the touch but loaded with a nice flavor that wasn’t overwhelming. The chipotle makes itself known quickly, but in a subtle manner, and it isn’t overwhelming, which complements the other flavors. This is a great alternative to the microwave popcorns and others that are so loaded with artificial ingredients. Granted, it does have ingredients like maltodextrin and smoke flavor, but the ingredients are still better than other mostly artificial snacks.

For those looking for a light snack that satisfies hunger quickly, SOYJOY bars are a nice healthy option.

The bar is great for a quick snack and the consistency is just right: not to dry and not to chewy. The flavor is very enjoyable and not overshadowed by sweetness. The calorie count is fine for someone concerned with their daily intake, and the carb count prevents that sudden surge/crash that’s so common with other bars that carry higher carb counts. In fact, the website states that all of SOYJOY’s bars have a low glycemic level.

Overall, this is a very nice treat when you have a hankering for something that satisfies.

Giveaway Announcement and REVIEW: St. Claire’s Organic Peppermints

First of all I have an exciting announcement. Every week in August, LWF will hold a giveaway of a package of 12+ gluten free snacks, desserts, and foods. I will provide a list of all the products included so you can see what you’re winning. I’ll use Rafflecopter, and if you’ve already followed me on Twitter, don’t worry – you’ll still be able to enter the giveaway by telling me what you’d like to see on this site. I’ll have a different question every week.

Okay, on with the review!

St. Claire’s Organics is a company that offers mints, hot cocoa mixes, candy, and more that are organic, GMO free, vegetarian (sometimes fully vegan), gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, casein free, peanut and tree nut free, corn free, soy free, shellfish and fish free, and gelatin free.

The very first indication of how good these would be was that their peppermint smell escaped the packaging, which was very appealing. Mints are meant to be strong to ensure they work and don’t just taste good. It’s always a good sign to smell them through the package.

When I popped one into my mouth, I thought it had just the right balance of light sweetness and a hearty peppermint flavor. Not overpowering, but just right. The flavor was consistent until the mint was fully dissolved, and it left a very pleasant aftertaste when was gone. That’s not something that I can say for every mint I’ve tasted, so I was particularly happy with that.

DSC_0326

These are as good as the best artificially flavored mints, but of course they’re a much healthier alternative. With these, you avoid artificial sweeteners and other common chemicals. Plus you’re buying them for a good cause: 10% of the profits for these mints goes to the EthnoMedicine Preservation Project. See the picture above for what they do.

It’s an easy switch to move from mints with preservatives and other unreadable things and only use these going forward.

REVIEW: Gluten Free Deep River Zesty Jalapeño Potato Chips

Health Values: Gluten free, non-GMO, Kosher.

I received a bag of Deep River Snacks Zesty Jalapeño chips from the annual Seashore Celiacs picnic in June. It’s not terribly hard to find gluten free potato chips, but it isn’t quite as easy to find gluten free potato chips with completely natural ingredients in a fun flavor.

deep river zesty jalapeno chips

When I first opened the bag, I noticed the fresh, not greasy aroma, which is always a welcome discovery. The chips were nice and crisp with a very appealing flavor. The jalapeño added some nice spice to the chips at the right level so it doesn’t overrun the chips overall flavor. The only thing I didn’t love is that they tasted saltier than I would have guessed based on the nutritional panel, so they could be improved by a slightly lighter touch of sodium in the future.

DSC_0237

Overall, it’s a great chip that stands on its own and doesn’t need dips or salsa to give it substance.
